Free Lecture: Shakespeare in Intercultural Asian Theatre Performance: The Bard

Shakespeare is a frequent source of intercultural work that uses Asian performance techniques. This paper will consider Larry Reed's Tempest and Takahashi Yasunari and Nomura Mansai's Kyogen of Errors discussing how the local and the Global interface in the current cultural order. Economics of globalization, cross-cultural aesthetics, intercultural artists and related issues will be explored.
Kathy Foley is a professor of theatre arts at the University of California-Santa Cruz. She has performed wayang golek purwa regularly since 1979 and has been invited over the last two decades to perform at the Indonesian Wayang Festival (Pekan Wayang Indonesia), a national and international gathering of dalang. She spent six months in 2003 as a Fulbright Scholar working on "Cosmology and Character Type in Topeng and Wayang” and she taught in Thailand at the Cultural Management Program of Chulalongkorn University before returning to the US. She is currently at work on a book on mask and puppet performance in Southeast Asia.
