Just in time to ring in the romance of Valentine’s Day, young and old can experience Japan’s Hakuoh University Handbell Choir in three public performances. In their 16th tour of Hawai‘i, the 20 student handbell ringers led by acclaimed director Hirotaka Arai, will perform free concerts on February 14 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Paliku Theatre, and on February 15 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, 1560 South Beretania St. in Honolulu.
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the internationally recognized handbell choir will perform a range of selections from Japanese classics to contemporary Broadway hits. The choir has the capacity to ring seven octaves of handbells and their dedication to practice and performance has created worldwide demand for their music.
From their home in Oyama City, Tochigi prefecture, Japan, Hakuoh’s all-female ensemble has traveled to performances in Canada, England and Australia and has entertained audiences including the Emperor and Empress of Japan and the King and Queen of Belgium.
