What Stars Can Tell Us About Elementary Particles

February 14, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Manoa Campus, Watanabe Hall, Rm. 112

The Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: Dr. Alexander Friedland, Los Alamos National Laboratory, to speak on "What Stars Can Tell Us About Elementary Particles."

Abstract:
It is well known that to understand many astrophysical systems it is necessary to correctly model the microphysics. For example, as I will review, cooling by neutrino emission is crucial for stellar evolution. A nice corollary for a particle physicist is that astrophysical systems can often serve as valuable laboratories for learning about elementary particles, both known and proposed.

I will describe several examples when stars can help us study particle physics beyond the Standard Model: from constraining the neutrino properties to testing certain classes of models with extra dimensions.
