School of Architecture Spring Lecture Series: Lori Ryker

Lori Ryker makes her home in Livingston, Montana where she the founder and principal of studioryker, and the executive director and founder of Artemis Institute, an architectural education program that focuses on the relationship between nature and creativity. She grew up in Texas and has lived and worked in Boston, New York City, Portland, North Dakota, Alabama, and Basel Switzerland. Dr. Ryker is the author of Mockbee Coker: Thought and Process, Off The Grid: Modern Homes + Alternative Energy and most recently Off The Grid Homes. She was a founding partner of Ryker/Nave Design (1994-2007) that focused on ecologically inspired and sustainable architecture. The firm’s work has been published in The House You Build, Organic Style, Western Interiors and Design Journal, Residential Architect and Outside Magazine, among others. The Wapiti Valley residence received a Merit Award from Residential Architect in 2007.

Dr. Ryker lectures nationally on the topics of sustainability, off the grid technologies, and the Artemis Institute, which have included lectures at the National Building Museum, Structures for Inclusion Conference, New West Conference, H.O.P.E.S. Conference, University of Washington, University of Hawaii, and University of Texas Austin. She is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Architectural Education.

Dr. Ryker has taught at Montana State University, Texas A & M and Auburn University. She received a BED from Texas A & M University, Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Ph.D. from Texas A & M University.

How we understand the world and react to it, is directly tied to the quality and experience of the built and natural environments in which we live and socialize. This talk will focus on Artemis Institute and its architectural program, Remote Studio. Specifically exploring how Remote Studio promotes a program of learning responsibility to the self, environment and culture through creative practices.

*All lectures are free and open to the public and take place in Architecture Auditorium 205 on University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, 2410 Campus Rd, Honolulu, HI. Lectures begin at 5pm, seating is limited & early arrival is recommended. Lectures are followed by a short Q & A session and an informal reception in the courtyard of the Architecture building.
