Abstract: The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered and endemic species, with fewer than
1300 individuals living in the Main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. How
did these seals get to the Hawaiian Islands? What drove them to the brink of
extinction? Why do they continue to decline? I will attempt to answer these
questions, using genetics to elucidate the impact of hunting in the past and
the potential for future recovery.
