The Survival of Languages in the 21st Century

Peter K. Austin, renowned scholar on endangered languages from the University of London School of African and Oriental Studies, will speak at Mānoa as part of the Linguistic Society of Hawai‘i’s 2008 Symposium on Language Endangerment and Conservation. Austin’s talk, “The Survival of Languages in the 21st Century” will consider the fate of the world’s nearly 7,000 languages, why languages are really disappearing, how rapidly, and what can be done to address this crisis in our lifetime.
