Internet technology affects social interaction in an increasingly global society. Hawaii's remote location, yet strategic position in the Pacific Rim, makes the use of cyber technology imperative for education and assistive learning, but what is really happening in society with this abundance of immediate information, contact, and response? Can you really trust what you read? Marc Smith watches newsgroups and public email lists to make sense of the collective online community, or "social cyberspaces".
An important aspect of cyberspaces is also how computer technology "equalizes abilities". In partnership with one of our sponsors, the Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawai'i, Executive Director J. Michael Jones will also discuss assisted communities.
All Cyberforum events are organized and facilitated by sociology graduate students actively engaged in both our local and global world. Graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines throughout the UH system are welcome and encouraged to particpate in Cyberforum activities, event planning, and interactive forums.
Please contact Project Coordinator Cecilia Noble, Academic Events Coordinator Hiroki Igarashi, or Cat Wood, Chair of the Graduate Student Sociological Association (GSSA) if you wish to be a part of this inaugural cyberforum (gssa@hawaii.edu).
ADDITIONAL SPONSORS: UHM Telecommunications and Information Policy Group (TIPG), UHM School of Communications
