"Forget Revolution: Remembering Political Violence and Contesting Collective Identity in Macau (China)" by Cathryn Clayton, University of Macau and University of Hawai'i.
In the winter of 1966-67, the Portuguese-run city of Macau on the south China coast was shaken by a series of anti-government demonstrations that left eight Chinese dead and 212 wounded. The Cultural Revolution, it seemed, had arrived on the streets of Macau. Historians have posited this event as a formative moment in the creation of a collective identity for the Macau Chinese. Yet little work has been done to investigate how the people who experienced this violence evaluate its long-term significance.
In this presentation, based on oral histories of these long-past events, I ask who puts the “collective” in collective memory, revealing instead the gaps, complicities and unanswered questions that the assertion of any collectivity—be it national, ethnic, or local—must silence.
