In the 1970s, North American educators and scholars argued about the value of fairy tales in shaping of attitudes about gender, self, romance, marriage, family and social power. Feminists blame classic and Disney fairy tales for their reinforcement of female passivity, while others pointed to the presentation of strong heroines in less-known tales of magic. To what effects do films like Ever After, the Shrek series, Disney's Enchanted, and Pan's Labyrinth harness and manipulate the power of fairy tales? What kinds of problems and desires do fairy tale fictions and graphic novels explore? By exploring some of these texts, Dr. Bacchilega's talk will raise questions about the authority and promise of fairy tales at the turn of the twenty-first century.
