Bronze Age Yunnan: New Discoveries and Current Issues

April 18, 11:00am - 12:30pm
Manoa Campus, Art Building 137

Dr. TzeHuey Chiou-Peng, Associate Curator, Spurlock Museum, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Material goods excavated at Bronze Age sites in Yunnan, Southwest China, are noted for idiosyncratic features that combine traits from pastoral and sedentary cultures. This lecture discusses findings from recent analyses, which indicate that Yunnan bronze industry resulted from continual cultural contacts between Yunnan and its neighbors. These data also delineate the evolution of a regional culture that culminated in the establishment of socially distinct communities near the Lake Dian (circa 4th century BCE to 1st century CE).

In the light of recent archaeological discoveries in southwest China, this lecture explains the reason why interactions between ancient Yunnan and its surrounding regions occurred; it also lists research objectives for possibly solving problems in current study of Yunnan bronze culture in the framework of Southeast Asian archaeology.
