Yunnan and Its Cultural Diversity
Cultural phenomena cannot escape their unique physiographic and biological environments. The natural geographic diversity of Yunnan Province shapes and influences its ethnic minority cultures.
For centuries, Yunnan’s relative isolation shielded its cultural diversity. More recently, however, economic and social developments have given rise to convenient transportation and easier access to Yunnan minority areas from the rest of China and the outside world. In particular, the blooming tourist industry has complicated life for Yunnan’s local minority communities. How can these tensions be resolved?
Jiayun Liu’s research embraces a range of topics in ethnology, sociology, and anthropology. She has written or contributed to The Picture History of Chinese Minorities’ Plays (2007) and the Yunnan Culture Industry Status and Development Report (2006).
