Topics covered are InDesign power tips and tricks; images, frames, and links; Photoshop quick fixes; beautiful typography; mastering automated formatting with styles; and InDesign creative effects.
Images and Frames and Links, Oh My! (9:00-10:15am)
If you don't understand how InDesign handles images, you're going to end up banging your head against a wall. Stop the pain and learn it here. Learn quick-fix Photoshop tricks for color correction, noise reduction, and image editing; clipping paths; picture linking and the links palette; frame fitting options; bringing back lost of hidden details; and selective sharpening.
Beautiful Typography (10:30-11:45am)
InDesign is the undisputed master of typography, but to get the best-looking type, you need to really understand its type features. Learn to turn good-enough type into beautiful type. Master OpenType settings, hanging punctuation, text frame options, and automatic bullets and numbering.
You've Got Style(s) (1:00-2:30pm)
Explore dozens of tips and techniques for getting the most out of your character, paragraph and object styles. This session is a must for seasoned production artists who need to boost their productivity. Covered are power searches with style sheets, the automation of run-in heads and formatted drop caps with nested styles, the formatting of an entire story with dozens of styles through a single click, the secret of efficiency through object styles, and table styles.
InDesign Creative Effects (2:45-4:00pm)
InDesign CS3 has made it even easier to create visually rich effects without having to switch over to Photoshop. This session will walk you through the new Effects panel, including the control of the transparency of objects, fills, and strokes; blend modes; and drop shadows, glows, gradient masks, and more.
Michael Ninness, InDesign senior product manager, paid his way through the Graphic Design program at the University of Washington by teaching digital imaging tools and techniques. Since then, he has worked professionally in the graphics software industry as a product manager and user interface designer of products for creative professionals at Extensis, Microsoft, and Adobe. Ninness was executive director of Lynda.com, an award-winning education provider of self-paced online video training, CDs, books, and events. He is the author of Photoshop 7 Power Shortcuts and is a contributor to Photoshop User and Design Graphics magazines, and he dreams in keyboard shortcuts. He lives in Seattle with his wife and two daughters, but is always scheming to make his way back to Hawai`i to teach Photoshop.
