Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai 40th Anniversary Concert
August 30, 7:00pm - 9:00pmManoa Campus, ORVIS Auditorium
Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai, under the direction of its founder and UH lecturer, Masatoshi Shamoto, with guests from the Japan Gagaku Society, present a concert in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Hawai'i Gagaku Society (Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai).
Gagaku, or Japanese Court Music, is an ancient music tradition dating back some 1,400 years. The theme for this performance will be the Japanese classic “Tale of Genji” (Genji Monogatari), generally considered to be the world’s first novel, written by Lady Murasaki (Murasaki Shikibu) during the height of the Heian period about 1,000 years ago.
The Genji – as the tale is often called – mentions many of the Gagaku pieces that will be performed. The program will also include dance pieces, Bugaku, featuring masked dancers who wear elaborate costumes of silk brocade.
