Treasure Island: Roman Gold and Silver in Britain
November 13, 7:30pm - 9:00pmManoa Campus, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Doris Duke Theatre
Dr. Catherine Johns, Senior Curator, Roman Britain, British Museum London.
The province of Britannia was at the northernmost border of the Roman Empire. Comprising the modern countries of England, Wales and a little of Scotland, it was a small province, and unlike Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia and other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries, its pre-Roman culture was relatively unsophisticated, without written literature or great cities. Yet there was no lack of wealth and taste in this remote frontier province. Some of the most impressive hoards of gold and silver treasure from the Roman world – coinage, jewellery and silver utensils – have been found in Britain. This talk will provide a survey of the most important Romano-British treasures, including those from Backworth, Snettisham, Ashwell, Water Newton, Mildenhall and Hoxne.
