Francis Haar Photography Exhibit
November 13, 2008 - December 31, 2008Manoa Campus, Hamilton Library Bridge Gallery
FRANCIS HAAR’S HAWAI‘I YEARS, 1960-1997 ~ This exhibit celebrates the gift of photographer Francis Haar’s Hawai‘i negatives, proofs, selected prints and associated materials. Donated by his son, Tom Haar, the gift is a major resource concerning life and the arts in Hawai‘i during the second half of the 20th century. It is housed in the Jean Charlot Collection as part of the Archive of Hawai‘i Artists. The exhibition touches upon some of Haar’s favorite themes — hula, artists of Hawai‘i, portraits of children and others, disappearing Honolulu, changing and changeless landscapes—and some of his work reflecting his long friendship with artist Jean Charlot.
Preservation and organization of the gift was supported by the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, the Cooke Foundation, the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation and the Jean Charlot Foundation.
