Noho Hewa Screening
December 20, 6:00pm - 8:30pmKaua'i Campus, Performing Arts Center
Kaua'i Community College's Hawaiian Studies Department, in collaboration with Malama Kaua'i and the Koani Foundation, is presenting a documentary entitled "Noho Hewa: The Wrongful Occupation of Hawai'i," winner of the Hawai'i International Film Festival's 2008 Award for Best Documentary. This award winning film is about some of the many issues facing Native Hawaiians today.
"Noho Hewa" will show on Sat., Dec. 20, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Kaua'i Community College Performing Arts Center and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, Anne Keala Kelly.
This documentary is a contemporary look at Hawaiian people, politics and resistance in the face of their systematic erasure under U.S. laws, economy, militarism, and real estate speculation. It is a raw, unscripted story and it makes critical links between the military occupation of Hawai'i, the fraudulence of statehood, the Akaka Bill, homelessness, desecration and more. Featured are interviews with Haunani-Kay Trask, Kaleikoa Ka'eo, Noenoe Silva, Keanu Sai, J. Kehaulani Kauanui and others.
All are welcome to attend this event. According to filmmaker Kelly, “Noho Hewa can and should be used to further our collective causes here. It's not often that a feature-length film represents actual Hawaiian matters.”
Suggested donations of $10 or more will go towards the fundraising efforts of the filmmaker to cover expenses associated with the film and the cost of this screening. KCC Hawaiian Club will be selling refreshments prior to the showing.
