Federal Judge Ginsburg to speak at UH Law School

January 16, 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Manoa Campus, UH Law School Classroom 1

The Federalist Society is proud to present “Originalism in the Supreme Court,” an event featuring the Honorable Douglas H. Ginsburg, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Ginsburg was the Chief Judge from 2001 to 2008. From 1975 to 1983 he was a professor at Harvard Law School. Judge Ginsburg then worked for the Reagan Administration until he was appointed a federal judge in 1986. Judge Ginsburg has had the further honor of being announced as the nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court by President Reagan in 1987, though Judge Ginsburg later withdrew from consideration. Judge Ginsburg has written on a variety of legal topics, most notably originating the theory behind what has become known as the “Constitution in Exile.”

The event will take place Friday, January 16, 2009 at 1:00pm at the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, Classroom 1, 2515 Dole Street, Honolulu, Hawaii. Lunch will be served. The event is open to the public, but people who are not Law School students must RSVP to loren.tilley@gmail.com no later than January 13, 2009.

Originalism, a theory of jurisprudence based on the proposition that the U.S. Constitution has a fixed, ascertainable meaning established at the time of its drafting, has the potential to greatly affect American society in the 21st century. Many distinguished jurists and scholars advocate the use of Originalism when interpreting our Constitution including, most notably, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Whether an adherent of Originalism or not, one cannot overstate its influence in shaping the future of our democracy.
