Greater Expectations: Liberal Education and America's Promise

Tuesday, January 27, 2009
4:00 - 6:00 PM (reception to follow)

Meet the distinguished panelists

Dr. Tori Haring-Smith
became Washington & Jeff erson College’s 12th president in January 2005. Dr. Haring-Smith holds doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College.

Dr. Judith Ramaley
is Winona State University’s 14th president. Dr. Ramaley received her bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College in 1963 and earned her doctorate in 1966 at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also served as chair for the Greater Expectations national panel.

Dr. Carol Geary Schneider
has been president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities since 1998. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Mount Holyoke College. She also studied at the University of London’s Institute for Historical Research and earned a PhD in history from Harvard University.

Drs. Haring-Smith, Ramaley, and Schneider are leading advocates for, and former panel members of, Greater Expectations (GE), a national initiative introduced by the Association of American Colleges and Universities that seeks to raise academic standards for undergraduate achievement. Today, higher education is forced to reevaluate its effectiveness and relevance within the global community. Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) is guiding these efforts by addressing the realities of an ever-changing world and articulating the importance of liberal education, i.e., intellectual and practical skills, expanded knowledge, and personal and social responsibilities.

The University of Hawai’i at Manoa has a team of faculty and administrators dedicated to introducing GE and LEAP to the campus community.
We invite you to attend this presentation to learn more about these two initiatives from our distinguished guests and how to apply their principles into practice.

For more information about GE and LEAP please visit http://www.aacu.org/gex/index.cfm

RSVPs are recommended; please call Laarni by Jan. 23, 956-5790
