Dr. Harriet N. Natsuyama: "Return to Pono"

January 27, 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Manoa Campus, Queen Lili'uokalani Center for Student Services, Room 411

Dr. Harriet Natsuyama, past president of Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science and founding member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter, will offer her perspectives on the relationship of science to humanity in these days of imbalance on Earth. Open discussion to follow.

From the center of the Pacific Ocean come the Voices on the Wind. Relaying their message, Dr. Natsuyama takes us to the days of old when the Earth was new, as told to us by the chant, He Kumulipo. We see the birth of life, its development and its subsequent decline. Finally we learn the prophecy of the Return to Pono, the Way of Harmony, which gives us hope for the future. We, as scientists and citizens of Gaia, Planet Earth, must meet the challenges of our times and accomplish the Return to Pono.

Dr. Natsuyama, a native of Hawaii, educated as an astrophysicist in Honolulu, Los Angeles, and Kyoto, has served the scientific community as author, professor, engineer, mathematician, and computer scientist. She was Rockwell International Professor of Systems Engineering, mathematician at the Rand Corporation, senior scientist at Hughes Aircraft Company, and is the author of seven books and two hundred journal publications. She was national president of Graduate Women in Science and divides her time between Honolulu and Los Angeles. Her activities involve her in the Alpha Lambda Pacific Chapter of GWIS, in research, lecturing, and presenting courses on changing perspectives of reality and transforming consciousness toward inner and outer peace.
