English Department Colloquium and Reading Series
February 19, 3:00pm - 4:30pmManoa Campus, Kuykendall 410
Reading of “His Eye,” a pidgin short story, by Chris Kelsey, PhD candidate and lecturer in English. A limited number of copies of the story will be available at the reading.
The story is told by a mature narrator who is troubled by the memory of a high school beating. The victim was crippled; the narrator and his friends are punished. The story-teller stumbles across the victim and revisits his troubled past.
This piece is one of a growing number or stories the author has written entirely in Pidgin. The language--and its challenges--fascinate him, and he would appreciate further discussion of whether or not this is a viable direction for local fiction following the reading. --A resident of some 53 years, Kelsey has been attempting to write local fiction since his return to Mānoa in 1996. He has enjoyed success in the Patsy Sumie Saiki fiction contest and his stories have appeared in The Hawai‘i Review as well as in the collection, Undrawn Lines.
