March 9, 2009 - February 9, 2009Manoa Campus, 2515 Dole Street
Gun Control and the Right to Bear Arms: A debate on the impact of District of Columbia v. Heller
Presented by UH Law School Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy.
In District of Columbia v. Heller, 128 S. Ct. 2783 (2008), the Supreme Court of the United States held that the right to bear arms protected an individual’s personal right to own firearms for private use.
The Federalist Society and the Matsunaga Institute for Peace are proud to present Gun Control and the Right to Bear Arms: A debate on the impact of District of Columbia v. Heller. This event will feature a debate on the future of gun rights and gun control in light of this important case.
Arguing in favor of more expansive gun rights is Attorney Alan Gura. On March 18, 2008, Gura successfully represented Dick Heller in the Supreme Court of the United States in District of Columbia v. Heller. Gura is also involved in ongoing litigation that could have national consequences, including potential effects on Hawai'i’s gun laws.
Opposing Mr. Gura will be Professor Jon Van Dyke. Van Dyke is a professor at the William S. Richardson School of Law and teaches constitutional law, international law and international protection of human rights. Professor Van Dyke has been involved with and written on many important cases involving constitutional law.
The debate will be moderated by Aviam Soifer, dean of the UH law school.
The debate will take place Monday, March 9, 2009 at 12:45 pm at the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, Classroom 2, 2515 Dole Street, Honolulu, Hawaii. Lunch will be served.
The event is open to the public, but people who are not University of Hawai'i at Manoa students must RSVP to loren.tilley@gmail.com no later than March 6, 2009.
