Title:
Monitoring and Modeling of Water Flow and Solute Transport Under Different Manure Amendments in Hawaii
Abstract:
The application of N amendments (organic or inorganic) is important and a key factor to increase crop productivity. however, improper application of organic amendment (OA) may impact the environment through nitrate leaching. In this study, three field experiments at Poamoho and Waimanalo were conducted to evaluate the effect of OA types (chicken and dairy), rates (0, 150, 300 and 600 kg/ha total N equivalent) and levels (one and two time application) under sweet corn crop on: 1) Nitrate concentration within and below the root zone, 2) Nutrient concentration in crop roots and shoots, and (3) the performance of Everglades Agro-Hydrology Model (EAHM) under Hawaiian tropical conditions. The OA type and rate of application significantly increased nitrate concentration within and below the root zone. There was a significant increase in macro and micro-nutrient concentration in plant roots and shoots under OA type and rate of application compared to control treatment. Simulations using physically based EAHM were shown to adequately predict soil water within and below root zone as compared to field observed data.
