Attendance to the event is FREE and open to all from the Maui Nui visitor industry and the community at-large. The forum will bring together Maui Nui stakeholders within the tourism industry and beyond to discuss current and emerging opportunities for developing and promoting the sustainability of tourism in our islands. The forum will feature presentations and panel discussions from tourism and sustainability experts and practitioners such as Ramsay Taum, Special Assistant to the Dean at the UH-School of Travel Industry Management, William Durham, Co-Director of the Center for Responsible Travel at Stanford University, Masaru Takayama of the International Ecotourism Society, and many others. John Cusick of the UH Manoa Environmental Center and Harold Richins of the UH School of Travel Industry Management will also present on proceedings from the Summit for Sustainable Travel in the Hawaiian Islands being held on Oahu on April 21st.

The forum will cover some of the myriad forms of locally based tourism that have the potential to contribute to the long term sustainability of our island economies, environment and society. The event will feature an overview of emerging models in the tourism of sustainability including agricultural, environmental, educational, volunteer and culturally based forms of tourism. The program will also highlight best practices amongst island resorts that focus on advancing various aspects of sustainability within their operations, while at the same time fostering community support, improving their bottom line, and increasing customer satisfaction. Emphasis will be placed on how these sustainability paradigms can be further integrated into tourism operations to provide a unique and holistic experience for visitors, as well as being mutually beneficial to the host community and visitors alike.

Please feel free to contact us by phone or at alyse@sustainablemaui.org should you have any questions about this event. We hope that you will be able to join us for this important forum on Sustainable Tourism Pathways for Maui Nui and help us build a sustainable future for Maui Nui.
