Sustainable Development and the Environment in Uzbekistan

As a developing country, Uzbekistan has been facing various issues caused by the conflict of economic development and environmental conservation.

During the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan was the country where mainly cotton was cultivated due to it’s favorable agricultural conditions like a warm climate, a long growing season, and plentiful sources of water for irrigation.

Was it possible to integrate economic growth and environmental conservation in that time? Nobody was concerned about this question because the primary goal was only economic profit. Therefore, various kinds of agrochemicals, fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides, insecticide and herbicide and huge amounts of irrigation water were excessively used in order to obtain more cotton crop.

As a result, enormous environmental challenges, including water, air and soil pollution, salinization, Aral Sea disaster, drinking water deficiency and health problems have become more prominent throughout Uzbekistan.

At present time, several international and national research groups have been devoting their work towards these environmental issues in Uzbekistan.
