Stir it up!: Celebrating Malcolm X & Int'l Workers
May 4, 11:00am - 2:00pmManoa Campus, UHM Campus Center Courtyard
Join us Monday May 4th from 11am-2pm at UHM Campus Center Courtyard in celebration of Malcolm X's birthday (19 May) and International Workers' Day (1 May)!
The event, co-sponsored by CEJE, 'Ohana Koa, Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific, AFSC-CHOICES and DMZ-Hawai'i / Aloha 'Aina, combines the two holidays not only because they occur in the same month (& it's cheaper to have one event rather than two), but because brother Malcolm fought and labor activists continue to fight for human rights for those who are oppressed by societal, economic, and political structures.
We recognise Malcolm X as not the racist demagogue some like to claim he is, but as a person who throughout his life evolved and struggled for the truth, and as a peace & justice activist who never backed down or sold out.
As of right now, we have a rad line-up of student, faculty and activist speakers, as well as information tables from various organisations, a mini-fashion show comprising sweatshop-free clothing, and performances by SUDDEN RUSH, Fealofani o Samoa, Tekniqlingz and Sewa Fare. Free food provided, shave ice on sale!
Let's commemorate the ho`okū`ē spirit of our ancestors and the ho`okū`ē spirit in each of us!
