Egyptology Lecture

May 5, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Honolulu Academy of Arts, Doris Duke Theatre

Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Director of the Egyptian Expedition at the University of Arizona. This fully illustrated lecture will look at the speaker's excavation and study of several royal and royal-related tombs in the Valley of the Kings, as well as giving an overview of his current investigation of the memorial temple of Queen Tausert, one of only a handful of queens who ruled ancient Egypt as a king about 1200 B.C.E.

This little-known but fascinating monarch is mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as king of Egypt at the time of the Trojan War. The last ruler of her dynasty and the last descendent of the renowned pharaoh Ramesses the Great, Tausert also held claim to greatness, copied her illustrious ancestor in significant ways, and was buried alongside other pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings. But much of Tausert’s life remains a mystery and is now being studied in this excavation - which is shedding new light on the queen as well as on her funerary monument.

The author of numerous books and articles on ancient Egypt, including two books on the Valley of the Kings, Dr. Wilkinson has focused much of his life's research on the royal valley and its monuments.
