Learn about the STAR Community Index
May 11, 5:30pm - 6:30pmMaui Campus, Pilina Building Multipurpose Room
Aloha no,
The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) is excited to host what will most certainly be yet another highly informative sustainability presentation. On Monday May 11, 2009 from 5:30pm-6:30pm on the Maui Community College campus in the Pilina Building Multipurpose Room, SLIM in partnership with the USGBC Hawaii Chapter will host a presentation and discussion by Ms. Lynne Barker, Program Director for STAR Community Index entitled “Charting a Clear Path toward a Sustainable Future: Learn about the STAR Community Index”. The STAR Community Index is a new initiative launched by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Center for American Progress.
STAR aims to provide a national, comprehensive rating system for local governments to assess sustainability performance. The system will guide responsible and accountable decision-making by intertwining economic, environmental and social concerns. STAR endeavors to be the most credible, useful and effective tool available to cities and counties for identifying and engaging the key leverage points available to affect positive economic, environmental and social change–resulting in more robust governance and prosperity, and a healthier populace and natural environment.
The system will cover a broad range of local government priorities from issues they are directly responsible for such as municipal operations and services to issues that cities and counties have influence over such as economic development, air quality, and community health. The result will be a robust system that will be flexible enough to serve both large and small jurisdictions.
STAR credits will be organized under the three pillars of sustainability–environment, economy, and society–and will address issues ranging from climate protection and green buildings and neighborhoods to green jobs and the emerging sustainable economy to early childhood learning and education reform to social inclusion and race and social justice.
