An Evening with the Masters: Slack Key Workshop

Slack key guitar Masters Cyril Pahinui and Ron Loo will conduct a two-day slack key guitar workshop, An Evening with the Masters, at Windward Community College on Thursday, May 14 and Fri., May 15, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
• Thurs., May 14 – Ron Loo, assisted by Pomaika‘i Loo, will focus on the open G tuning and the chords and lyrics of a traditional song using the tablature method.
• Fri., May 15 – Cyril Pahinui will focus on the open C tuning and the chords and lyrics of traditional songs using the chord method.
“Here’s a chance to learn from the masters–to create your own slack key sound,” says Ron Loo.
About workshop leaders Ron Loo and Cyril Pahinui Grammy Award-winning Hawaiian slack key guitarist Cyril Pahinui and son of musical legend, Gabby Pahinui, is one of Hawai‘i’s most gifted guitarists and singers. Cyril has twice played at Carnegie Hall, has contributed to two Grammy Award-winning albums, received several Hoku Hanohano Awards, and recorded on more than 25 Hawaiian musical releases.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts recognizes Ron Loo as a Master Folk Artist of Slack Key. Loo is the originator of the Ke Kumu Pali “Talk Story Series” at Windward Community College, where he teaches slack key guitar, classical guitar, Hawaiian style guitar and ukulele. Loo performs throughout the islands with his musical group Pila Nahenahe. He is the author of three slack key instructional books titled "He Kalana Kakau Ki Ho‘alu" and has recently recorded his latest slack key CD titled “Back to Back”.
