August 20, 12:00pm - 1:30pmManoa Campus, Henke Hall #109
The Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work Presents: Social workers at the front: The Israeli Case.
A Brown Bag Presentation
by
Uri Yanay, Ph.D.
The Israeli society is challenged almost daily from within and from the outside. During the last decade, waves of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and Ethiopia have required sensitive and comprehensive attention and care. Frequent hostile (terrorist) acts have harmed and traumatized the entire population. Social workers have a leading role in dealing with these and other challenges facing Israeli society. Jewish and Arab social workers are required to be resourceful while operating in a complex, multi-ethnic, multi-denominational, and closed society.
This presentation will highlight some of the challenges facing social workers in this setting.
Professor Uri Yanay, a visiting scholar from Jerusalem, researches and teaches at the School of Social Work and Social Welfare at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In recent years, his studies have focused on the social policy and welfare services designed for victims of crime and terrorism. Part of his research examines ways to empower victims and help them emerge from that role.
Please bring your lunch and join us for this relevant and topical subject. Students, faculty, staff, and guests are welcome. No RSVP required.
