Galactic Neutrino Communication and SETI
September 10, 3:30pm - 5:00pmManoa Campus, Watanabe Hall, Rm. 112
The Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium:Prof. Sandip Pakvasa, University of Hawaii at Manoa, to speak on "Galactic Neutrino Communication and SETI."
Abstract:
I will discuss some ideas in the use of neutrinos in communication across the galaxy by advanced civilizations and how we may intercept such signals and discern their presence. I will also discuss a scheme to employ neutrinos in modulating Cepheid variable stars as a sort of galactic semaphore. Most previous schemes for detecting ETI have involved the electromagnetic spectrum, while we see other possibilities. The philosophy of searching here is to employ any and all methods to search for ETI communication, and particularly the ones we have outlined which require only the examination of available or soon to be acquired data.
