Public Health Faculty Colloquium Series

Dr. Bruce Wilcox will present "The Challenge of Integrative Research in Emerging Zoonotic Diseases: Arboviruses and Avian Flu in Southeast Asia."
The recent historically abrupt resurgence of old diseases (e.g., dengue. yellow fever, malaria) and increasing appearance of new pathogens (HIV, Ebola, Nipah, H5N1) surprised and has confounded agencies and leading researchers who believed the era of plagues and pandemics was largely over. Subsequent findings pointed to the multifactorial character of disease emergence causality and the need for more integrative, interdisciplinary research. The challenge that remains is the formulation and implementation of integrative or transdisciplinary research initiatives. This presentation provides an overview of one increasingly adopted integrative research "blueprint". Two projects, on the emergence of arboviruses and avian influenza in Southeast Asia, will be presented as case illustrations.
