West Side Story

September 25, 7:30pm - 10:00pm
Windward Campus, Paliku Theatre

Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College in Kaneohe announces their fall production of the hit Broadway musical West Side Story opening Fri., Sept. 25.

The landmark show, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, will run through Oct. 25 with shows each weekend on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 4:00 pm (no show Sat., Sept. 26).

The show is directed by Ron Bright, who has helmed many shows at Paliku, including last year’s hits Miss Saigon and The Wind in the Willows, with both receiving Pookela awards this year from the Hawai'i State Theatre Council.

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

It centers on Tony, one of the Jets, played by Kyle McCraw, who had the lead in last year’s production of High School Musical at Army Community Theatre. His love interest, Maria, is portrayed by Kim Anderson, who has been honored with Pookela awards for her parts in The Wind in the Willows at Paliku last spring, and in the Wizard of Oz at Diamond Head Theatre.

Dancing sizzles in West Side Story and Paliku Theatre is thrilled to have Marcelo Pacleb, artistic director of 24/VII Danceforce as choreographer for this exciting show, originally conceived by the great Jerome Robbins. Marcelo has a number of Honolulu’s best dancers in this show, including Tori Anguay as Anita, Chris Villasenor as Riff, Zare Anguay as Bernardo, Lake Smits and even Miss Hawaii 2007, Ashley Layfield, as the Jet tomboy named Anybodys.
