Makahiki in Old Hawaii
November 18, 12:30pm - 1:15pmWindward Campus, Hale 'Akoakoa 105
Astronomical and Cultural Perspectives of Makahiki. The yearly arrival of the star cluster Makaliʻi (Pleiades) in the eastern sky at sunset signals the beginning of the Kanaka Maoli year. It also marks the beginning of a very special time in the life of the Kanaka Maoli, the annual Makahiki festival.
Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Dr. Paul Coleman is an associate astronomer with the University of Hawaiʻiʼs Institute for Astronomy where he does research and teaches astronomy. As a Native Hawaiian, Paul is a member of several advisory councils aimed at increasing the number of children in science and technology fields. He hopes to increase Native Hawaiian involvement at all levels in the excellent astronomy efforts in Hawaiʻi.
