"Victims of a Map": The 3rd World and the Unreality of the Post-Racial State”
Dr. Njoroge Njoroge
Dept. History, UHM
The notion of "post-racism" and the proposition of "post-racial" societies have gained increasing prominence and currency in both the academy and popular culture. This presentation seeks to interrogate just what this "post-" in "post-racial" means. How are these discourses being motivated? Who do these logics serve? And, finally, is this "post-racial" society extant, a fait accompli, something in the works, or something to be desired? My paper attempts, paradoxically, to both center and de-center the United States in order to examine the ways in which discourses of race and racial practices intersect and co-ordinate with US domestic and foreign policy agendas. The making and marking of race have been central to the creation of the modern world, if as W.E.B. DuBois put it: "the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line," what's troubling us in the 21st?
