"Towards basin-scale monthly maps of CO2 uptake in the North Atlantic Ocean"
Abstract:
Basin-scale maps of surface pCO2 with high spatial and temporal resolution are needed to calculate the ocean's carbon uptake on short (~annual) timescales. In contrast to CO2 concentrations in the well mixed atmosphere, seawater pCO2 is subject to high spatial and temporal variability. The potential of monitoring North Atlantic ocean-surface pCO2 on a basin scale by combining Voluntary Observing Ship observations with ARGO float and remote sensing data respectively is explored in the context of an eddy-resolving model. The study shows that with present-day observational coverage North Atlantic CO2 uptake can be estimated with an uncertainty of about 10%.
