December 4, 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Saunders 637

The Women's Studies Colloquium Series is pleased to present:

A Woman’s Life in Politics: A Talk by State Representative Cynthia Thielen

Cynthia Thielen (R) represents the 50th District (Kailua/Kaneohe Bay) in the State House of Representatives.

Rep. Thielen left Stanford at age 19 and raised four children with her husband Mickey in Kailua. In the 1970s, she returned to school, and graduated with a J.D. from the William Richardson School of Law at UHM. In her first case out of law school, she successfully represented the Protect Kaho`olawe `Ohana in their legal struggle to gain access to the island. She was an instrumental figure in the founding of the Women’s Studies Program at UHM. She will speak about these histories, the specific challenges that she faced as a woman involved in Hawai`i politics, and her current projects.

In her twentieth year in the Legislature, Rep. Thielen has co-sponsored Hawaii's greenhouse gas reduction bill and actively promotes wave energy as a major source of power for the islands. Also, she is a long-standing Co-Chair of the House Women's Caucus, which produces legislation to promote women's safety and equity in the workplace. She is a ranking member on the Judiciary, the Energy and Environmental Protection and the Water, Land and Hawaiian Affairs Committees and serves on the Committees for Housing and Consumer Protection and Commerce.

Opening remarks will be offered by Richard Dubanoski, Dean of the College of Social Sciences.
