21st Annual Symposium on Maritime Archaeology and

February 13, 2010 - February 15, 2010
NOAA Sanctuary Offices, Hawai`i Kai Executive Plaza, 6600 Kalaniana`ole Highway, Suite #300

SUNKEN WARBIRDS: The Legacy of Naval Aviation in the Pacific is the theme of this year’s symposium. Naval aviation holds a special place in the history of Hawai`i and the Pacific. From the early flying boats to carrier aircraft of World War II and beyond, advancements in aviation technology served to help shape the region. This history is reflected in the physical remains of crashed aircraft, often unseen beneath the ocean’s surface.

Two days of public presentations by noted regional and international specialists will be held at the NOAA Sanctuary Hawaii Kai conference facility February 13-14, with a field trip to the Pacific Aviation Museum on Monday February 15. Highlights include presentations involving Grumman aircraft, PBY-4 and PBY-5 Catalina flying boats, a Japanese bomber in the Solomon Islands, and a Douglas TBD-1 “Devastator” torpedo bomber, as well as updates on continuing archaeological fieldwork from the main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This is Hawai`i’s only annual event devoted to maritime history and underwater discoveries!

This year’s keynote speaker will be Kenneth DeHoff, Executive Director of the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island. Mr. DeHoff, a former Army pilot, will give an illustrated talk on current and future activities at the Pacific Aviation Museum. The keynote talk will be held Friday evening, February 12th on the University of Hawai`i’s Manoa campus, BusAd Building Room A-101 (Corner of University and Maile Way) at 7:00 PM. This talk is free and open to the public.
