Mānoa Campus, Orvis Auditorium

A concert of new music for the full AURA-J ensemble will feature works of composers from Japan and from Hawaii, including concertos for shakuhachi and for koto, as well as a world premiere. 7:30 p.m. Orvis Auditorium, UHM Music Department, corner of University and Dole Street. Tradition has a new face, as this exciting 9-member Tokyo group presents concerts of both contemporary and traditional pieces for shakuhachi, biwa, shamisen, koto, shinobue and Japanese percussion. This professional performing ensemble, founded by Minoru Miki, one of the most famous Japanese composers, is noted for utilizing Japanese instruments in innovative ways.

AURA-J is a professional musical ensemble performing and promoting new music composed for Japanese and Asian instruments.  Based in Tokyo, the ensemble is comprised of some of Japan’s finest musicians, and performs both as a large ensemble and in smaller groups of one to five instruments.  Since its founding by renowned composer Minoru Miki in 1998, AURA-J has presented numerous concerts and lectures in Tokyo, as well as in various rural areas in Japan.  In addition, AURA-J participates in a cultural program called Honmono no Butaigeijutsu Taiken Jigyô (Authentic Stage Arts Experience Program), sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.  The group is also active in educational activities, giving lectures and concerts at Japanese public schools.  AURA-J has served as the host ensemble for the Hokuto International Music Festival since its inception in 2006.  In order to cultivate multicultural approaches to music, AURA-J frequently collaborates with composers from outside of Japan in creating pieces that incorporate both Japanese and Western instruments, as well as voice.   The Honolulu performances will include several works by Hawaii-based composers.
