2010 Fire Prevention Week

2010 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

October 3-9, 2010 is Fire Prevention Week which commemorates the Great Chicago Fire- the two-day blaze that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 more homeless and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings on October 9-10, 1871.

That tragedy inspired reform across America, spurring new fire safety codes and public awareness campaigns. Each October, the National Fire Protection Association sponsors a fire prevention campaign to highlight the importance of fire safety education. This year’s theme focuses on how smoke alarms save lives and should be installed in every home.

The University of Hawaii Fire Safety Program in celebrating this year’s Fire Prevention Week will have an exhibit and information desk at the Campus Center on October 4 and 8, 2010, 7:30am-3:00pm. We will be handing out work place fire safety/fire prevention brochures and will also provide hands-on training on how to use portable fire extinguishers. Staff from the Honolulu Fire Department Community Relations will also join us to answer any fire safety/fire prevention questions. Firefighters from the Manoa Fire Station will be present on October 8, 2010 from 8:30am-10:30am to show their support to our fire safety/fire prevention informational campaign.
