Celebrating the Life and Career of Ellison S. Onizukaâ€
A public lecture by Claude Onizuka
Thursday, August 25 at 7:00 pm
Architecture Building Auditorium, UH Manoa Campus
NASA astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka was born in 1946 in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii. He graduated from Konawaena High School, Kealakekua, Hawaii, in 1964 and received his B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 1969 from the University of Colorado. Colonel Onizuka was selected as an astronaut by NASA in January 1978 based on his exceptional service within the US Air Force. As an astronaut his first mission was on STS 51C in January 1985 -- the first Department of Defense mission which orbited the Earth 48 times, logging a total of 74 hours in space. On his second mission, Colonel Onizuka served as a mission specialist on board the Orbiter Challenger mission 51L that launched from Kennedy Space Center on January 28, 1986. The seven-person crew died when the Challenger exploded 1 minute and 13 seconds after launch at 11:30 A.M. EST.
Please join us on Thursday August 25th at 7:00 pm in the Architecture Auditorium on the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus, where Claude Onizuka will share a lecture celebrating the life and career of his brother, Ellison S. Onizuka, Astronaut and Hawaiian Citizen. Sponsored by the UH Distinguished Lecture Series. Free and Open to the Public.
