Lion Dance and Music of Old Tokyo

August 27, 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Imin Center-Jefferson Hall

Featuring Kyosuke Suzuki
Co-presented by Taiko Arts Center
With Local guests Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble and Taiko Center of the Pacific Youth Group

Based in Tokyo, Kyosuke Suzuki is a master of Edo kotobuki jishi (lion dance of old Tokyo), matsuri bayashi (festival music), and kagura (shrine music). He has performed and toured with Hawai’i's Kenny Endo for nearly three decades, and is considered one of the finest and most influential lion dancers of the Tokyo style.

In Hawai’i, the festive Japanese lion dance is lesser known compared to Chinese versions, but is likewise indispensable at New Year's celebrations, and is performed on auspicious occasions to beckon good luck and good fortune. Also featured will be kumidaiko (modern ensemble taiko drumming).
