Effective and democratic governance continues to be one of the greatest challenges of Asia-Pacific region as countries cope with the demands of the global economy and pressures from citizens for greater access to services and economic opportunities and increased accountability and transparency. East-West Center’s Asia Pacific Governance and Democracy Initiative (AGDI) is a multi-year project that promotes governance capacity in the region through collaborative research, dialogue among governance actors, identification of regional trends and issues and dissemination of information.
The presentation will discuss the theory and practice of governance for human development in Asia. It will focus on the determinants and consequences of the citizen trust in government; the engagement of civil society organizations to promote democratic change; and the impact of governance capacity on such cross-border governance issues in Asia as migration, human trafficking, cross-boundary water management and infectious disease and health cooperation.
Shabbir Cheema is Senior Fellow, Research Program and Director, Asia Pacific Governance and Democracy Initiative, East-West Center. He was previously the Director of the Governance Division of UN Development Programme, senior staff of the UN Centre for Regional Development, Nagoya, Japan, and Visiting Fellow, Harvard University’s Ash Institute. He has taught at New York University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and University of Hawaii.
