Bollywood Mondays: "The Dirty Picture" (2011)

August 27, 3:30pm - 6:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics Auditorium (HIG 110)

The curtain opens on this fall's Bollywood Mondays film series with "The Dirty Picture," a risque recent blockbuster about the unlikely and meteoric rise of a small-town actress who desperately wants to make it big in India's glamorous movie industries of the 1980s.

The film features an award-winning, head-turning, daring, and controversial performance by Vidya Balan (Reshma/Silk) as the sensual starlet - loosely inspired by the real life of a heroine from that era. In her ascent, Silk draws the attention of an aging superstar (Naseeruddin Shah) and his unnoticed younger brother (Tusshar Kapoor), and the animosity of a dedicated filmmaker disgusted by Silk's films (Emraan Hashmi).

An entertaining tribute to and parody of India's colorful cinematic culture, "The Dirty Picture" is part of a brave new movement in Bollywood films. For a copy of the full semester film series schedule, see contact information below.
