FINALLY, MAHU CULTURE IN HAWAI‘I IS COMING OUT OF THE DARK… AND WITH GOOD LIGHTING! Free public film screening with Local director and producer, Connie Florez.

The Glades Project is a feature documentary about the human spirit to triumphantly overcome bigotry, hate and murder. The Glades Project reveals contemporary cultural challenges after statehood that was endured by a marginalized minority of Pacific Islanders known as Mahu.

In 1963-1973, if you were transgender and didn’t wear a label to identify yourself, it was called the “intent to deceive” and you were arrested on the spot with a $500 fine.

At the epicenter, we find the Glade Show Lounge, located in the heart of Honolulu’s Old Chinatown at 152 N. Hotel St., which at the time was the red light district. This is a celebrated group of local Mahu (transgender), where genders were blurred and ordinary boys became beautiful girls. The billboard moniker read in brightly lit lights: “Glade Show Lounge: Where Boys Will Be Girls
” The Glades Project reveals the stories that take viewers deep into the body and soul of the reality of life in Hawaii as never before seen. Each story is fearlessly and emotionally told for the very first time on camera!
