Richard Trappl, Associate Professor, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Vienna, Austria; and Director, Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna

“Menglong Poetry (朦胧诗): Chinese Lyrics after the Cultural Revolution”

Richard Trappl studied in Beijing through the years 1974 to 1975 and hence witnessed the end of the Cultural Revolution. During that time, he worked in a People’s Commune and in a steel factory. He came to know personally most of the poets of the time, especially Bei Dao (北岛), Gu Cheng (顾城), Shu Ting (舒婷), and Yang Lian (杨炼). His lecture will introduce and interpret their poetry both from the perspective of literary history and aesthetics, and from his personal knowledge of the poets.
