"It Says Here": Social Movements in West German Print Media, 1967-1972

Christina Gerhardt, LLEA / German

Christina Gerhardt is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where she teaches courses in 20th and 21st-century German literature, culture and film.

In this lecture Gerhardt presents and analyzes print media coverage of social movements and terrorist groups in West Germany between 1967 and 1970 and 1972. Her talk considers both corporate media, in particular the newspapers of the Springer press, and in leftist publications, such as Agit 883, revealing how their political concerns - expressed in content and form - reflect, intervene in and shape perceptions of the social movements.
