Science Technology Addition CLOSURE
November 9, 2012 - November 12, 2012Mānoa Campus, Hamilton Library Science Technology Addition
The upcoming three-day Veteran's Day weekend, November 10-12, has been chosen by UHM Facilities Management as the time when extensive mechanical work will take place in the Ground Floor of the Science Technology Addition of Hamilton Library. The newly renovated Edmondson Hall, right next door, will be provided with an air-conditioned environment. To make this possible, their chill water system is to be connected with the chillers in the Ground Floor of Hamilton. Because of the mechanical work being done, all air conditioning in the Science Technology Addition of Hamilton Library will be shut down between 5:00 PM on Friday, November 9 and 5:00 AM on Monday, November 12. Since there will be no air conditioning in the building, we are in danger of experiencing the kind of high humidity and high temperatures that are conducive to mold growth.
Facilities Management has arranged for dehumidifiers to be placed in the rare and archival areas of the Addition. However, the open stacks in Floors 1-4 will NOT have any supplementary dehumidification installed. In order to mitigate the situation, the Science Technology Addition will be locked and closed to all access throughout the weekend. The idea here is similar to what happens when your electrical power suddenly vanishes for no reason. You don't open the refrigerator or the freezer door if you want your food to stay cold. Similarly, if we do not admit any outside air or moisture-generating mobile units into the building, the temperature and humidity will tend not to rise much, at least for a day or two.
The Bridge doors will be locked at the close of the day (6:00 PM) on Friday, November 9, 2012. During the period of shutdown, there will be no access possible for the public or for staff members. Please make sure to check out the materials that you will need for the weekend by Friday, November 9th. We will be up and running when the Library reopens on Tuesday morning, November 13, 2012.
Needless to say, the older sections of Hamilton Library, known as Phase I and II, will still be open at the normal times on Saturday and Sunday, November 10-11, 2012.
