Tony Quagliano, Language Matters--Selected Poetry, and His Life in Literature

Tony Quagliano (1941–2007) was a poet, essayist, jazz writer, literary critic, editor, and professor of American Studies at the University of Hawai‘i and the Japan-America Institute for Management Science.
He published widely in numerous US and Hawai‘i literary journals, and was the editor of KAIMANA: The Journal of the Hawai‘i Literary Arts Council from 1991 to 2007. He published four books of poetry: Language Drawn and Quartered (Ghost Dance Press, 1975); Fierce Meadows (Petronium Press, 1981); Snail Mail Poems (Tinfish Presss, 1998); and pictographs (red moon press, 2008). He edited the Small Press Review's special Bukowski issue (1973) and Feast of Strangers: Selected Prose and Poetry of Reuel Denney (1999). He a;sp worked extensively with his wife, Laura Ruby, creating artist-writer collaborations and art exhibitions both in Hawai‘i and nationally.
Laura Ruby will be discussing Tony’s life and work alongside the newly published collection of his writing, Language Matters (NYQ Books, 2012).
Laura Ruby is the 2008 recipient of the Hawai’i Individual Artist Fellowship, the highest honor in the visual arts. Her prints and sculptures have been shown in national and international solo, juried, and invitational exhibitions. She also has commissioned large site-specific sculptures, among them Chinatown–Site of Passage. She has taught art at the University of Hawai‘i from 1977 to 2011. She edited the book, Mō‘ili‘ili–The Life of a Community, and has just published a book entitled Honolulu Town.
