Seminar - " Recovering from a Legacy of Mining in Crested Butte"

Summary: The presentation will provide an overview of watershed restoration activities in Crested Butte, Colorado with a primary focus on the environmental impacts of historic mining and the community's response to these issues. The presentation will touch on the cooperative roles of community-based watershed groups, state and federal agencies and specifically the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program in addressing natural resource management priorities.
Bio: Prior to arriving on Oahu Anthony worked as an environmental consultant, wildlife biologist, nature guide, non-profit director and science teacher. Anthony has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Georgia and is also a certified educator. In 2005, Anthony traded sea turtles, sub-tropical ecosystems, and surfing for the mountains of western Colorado and its hard rock mines, snowboarding, fly-fishing and rafting. Anthony Poponi served as the Director for the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition and Standard Mine Technical Advisory Group from 2006 to 2012 and in January of 2013 dusted off his surfboard and relocated to Oahu with his wife and two dogs.
