Media Reform in Myanmar: On-the-Ground Perspectives

June 12, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mānoa Campus, John A. Burns Hall, East-West Center Gallery

The dramatic democratic and economic reforms taking place in Myanmar (Burma) include an easing of restrictions on the media. Over the last two years, the Myanmar government ended half a decade of pre-publication censorship, opened the media marketplace to privately owned papers, and granted licenses for 16 daily newspapers. Two journalists from Myanmar who are in Honolulu as part of the East-West Center’s 2013 Jefferson Fellowships, will share first-hand perspectives on these changes and what they mean for the media and for the country.

Mr. Zayar Hlaing is an editor at Maw Kun magazine, which he and some of his colleagues founded in 2012 as the media began to open up. Maw Kun (The Chronicle) is a monthly news magazine that focuses mainly on in-depth, investigative stories.

Mr. Nyein Thaw Htoo is executive editor of CEO business and management magazine which is one of the six monthly published magazines of Today Publishing House Ltd.
